Starting your own website

Starting a website is simple. First, you need to know what you want your website to be called (the "domain name"). For example in this document, we'll say you work for Genero Pharmaceuticals. A good domain name for your company might be might be genero.com.
  1. Your first task is to make sure the website is available (that somebody doesn't already own this website name). You can check with a "whois" service. This is as easy as going here (www.betterwhois.com) and typing in the domain name that you want. Let's say genero.com is taken (as, indeed, it is). Try generopharmaceuticals.com. This isn't taken (at least, for our example).

  2. Now, you must register the domain. This can be accomplished in two ways. First, when you can call Quik to set up a website, we'll ask for the domain you want and we'll register it for you. But, if you'd rather see more of the website registration process, you can register it yourself with a registrar like this one (stargateinc.com), thus retaining complete control over your domain entry. Then, once you call Quik, you'll say "I've already registered my domain," and we'll give you the DNS servers to enter in the domain entry. Either way, this will cost you a small registration fee (Generally, from $10 to $30, depending on number of domains, etc.).

  3. Next, you must set up webspace with us. Our basic website plan is 19.95 (click for details). We will set this up over the phone with you. It generally takes only about 10 minutes. We'll ask you billing questions, company questions, and website questions. Once this process is complete, webspace should show up for you at http://www.generopharmaceuticals.com after 1 or 2 days. All you will see is a message saying "generopharmaceuticals.com coming soon...". This message is automatically generated when new webspace is create. It means everything is up and running.

The next two steps come in no particular order.

  4. Since you're most likely going to want more than "coming soon" on your website, you'll need a designer and, since you're reading this tutorial, I hope you'll choose Quik :) . We'll give you a free estimate and work with you to get your site up quickly, usually in a couple or a few weeks for a small business site.

  5. Also, you're probably going to want some new "email forwarding" addresses. These are names your company followed by "@generopharmaceuticals.com" that forward email to your current email address. For instance, let's say you wanted "prescriptions@generopharmaceuticals.com" and you had the email address gpharm@quik.com (you get three emaill address for setting up webspace with Quik). You can modify your email forwarding to have prescriptions@generopharmaceuticals.com point to gpharm@quik.com, so you're address will appear to the outside world as prescriptions@generopharmaceuticals.com. You can also have as many forwarding address as you like all go to the same email box. To add, edit, or remove email forwarding addresses, you'll have to click on "online customer support" above, then on "member information", then you'll log in with your Quik account (this is set up when you call). You'll follow the "email forwarding" links there.

  6. At this point, you should have your own website with email forwarding for your company. After these first couple of weeks of design, etc., everything should be smooth sailing.
